WALKING FOR WALKER – Are you
tough enough?
On Sunday 3rd December, 45 friends and family of Tom
Walker made the start of a 26 mile walk around Rutland Water. At 7am the
walking party set off from the village of Manton
in darkness and with a drizzle of rain failing to dampen spirits.
A mix of Tom's friends from Garendon School and
Loughborough Rugby Club as well as father Rick and brother Mike all went to
a great deal of effort to raise sponsorship for the 26 mile walk which
included the peninsular of the water. Co-coordinator of the days fund
raising Lee Hayes said that "we are still waiting for some monies to
come in but we are really blown away by the generosity of everyone to this
cause and we are hoping to raise a significant sum". Lee also
said that there was a great team effort on the day and commented "26
miles is a long way and everyone really pulled together to help each other
round and work towards a deserved drink at the end of the day".

All the walkers were helped along the way by a great
support team. David Roberts and Phil Talbot work through out the day
ensuring people did get lost or go to far astray.
Special mention should also go to the Syston Venture
Scouts who provided an invaluable source of soup, hot drinks and food along
the way. Lee said, "Alan Drage and the boys were so
enthusiastic. It was a great encouragement to see their mini bus on
the horizon. We were all very grateful for their generous donation
off resources and time".
Lee mentioned that Tom Walker was kept informed of the
progress of all the walkers throughout the day but was unable to meet
everyone at the end of the day.
The walk was completed by all of the party that set
out with everyone completing the walk just before darkness fell. The fit ‘youngsters’ completed the
circuit in under 7 hours, whereas Rick and Mike Walker, with moral support
and gentle persuasion from the Hayes brothers and Tubbs completed the
circuit in around 8 hours. Everyone really ‘enjoyed’ the walk,
blisters were plentiful, but boy did that beer at the end taste good!
Lee Hayes said "this was a great effort by all
concerned and the money raised will hopefully help the chosen
charities. We will continue to go on raising money in the new year
and supporting such a worth while cause."
